Five Sacks and a Napa Field Trip

The Miami Dolphins are 0-1. The quarterback was sacked five times. The best running back got 11 carries.

Welcome to the rebuild.

Miami lost 27-13 in Las Vegas with 259 yards, 13 first downs, two turnovers and a third-down offense that went 2-for-10. Malik Willis completed 15 of 27 passes for 220 yards and an interception. He ran for Miami's only touchdown. He was pressured 17 times, took five sacks and accepted the blame.

Good. The quarterback should own it. The rest of the offense can pull up a chair.

De'Von Achane finished with 36 yards on 11 carries. Miami ran for 74 as a team. Once the Raiders forced obvious passing downs, the rushers stopped pretending to respect the run and went hunting. Five sacks were the receipt.

Jeff Hafley still has "total confidence and faith" in Willis. That is what a first-year coach is supposed to say after Week 1. He also called the offense inconsistent. That is the polite version. Miami produced one touchdown, let Las Vegas control the ball for nearly 35 minutes and never found a second gear.

Now the Dolphins are spending the week in Napa before facing San Francisco. Hafley called it a chance for a young team to connect. Cards by the fire pits. Ping-pong. Pool time. Jordan Phillips found the In-N-Out Burger. Everyone is bonding.

Beautiful. The 49ers will not care.

San Francisco is the next test, not a healing retreat. Willis has to turn pressure into decisions instead of sacks. Achane has to become the center of the offense instead of a name in the game plan. Hafley has to make "connected" show up on third down, in protection and when the game starts leaning the wrong way.

This is a rebuild. One loss does not kill it. One Napa week does not validate it.

The Dolphins do not need another speech about chemistry. They need to block somebody, hand Achane the ball and give Willis a Sunday that does not end with five men standing over him.

Florida's NFL trio as preseason ends

Three different bets. Three different timelines. Preseason is over. The excuses are gone.

Dolphins

This is a rebuild with the lights still on. Malik Willis is the starter because the alternatives did not force the issue. Miami traded Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville and flipped a 2028 sixth-rounder to Green Bay for Kyle McCord. Then it claimed seven players off waivers in one day: Brady Cook, Justin Joly, Marcellas Dial, Reese Taylor, Julius Wood, Chukwuebuka Godrick, and Jarrett Kingston, plus free-agent edge Malik Herring. De'Von Achane is the only proven bright spot. Everything else is an audition.

Big: Going all-in on a full teardown and a high-volume draft class while signing Willis as the face of the next era. Miami is not pretending this is a retool.

Stupid: Handing Willis a multi-year commitment as the clear starter instead of pairing the rebuild with a cheap bridge and a higher draft swing at the position. The clock on the new regime started immediately.

Innovative: Treating the waiver wire like a second draft. Seven claims in one cycle is not normal roster management. It is a deliberate attempt to restock on the cheap and keep the average age low while everyone else is finished shopping.

The draft matched the philosophy. Volume over precision. A large class, early trench and secondary bets, and a clear willingness to torch the previous core. Miami is buying lottery tickets and living with the variance. That only works if the staff develops players faster than the roster bleeds. The risk is two years of public chaos. The reward is a cheaper, controllable core if any of the hits land. Paper bags. Long runway. Willis has to grow in public. The rest of the new faces have to prove they even belong.

Buccaneers

Tampa went bigger and meaner on defense and meant it. Rueben Bain Jr. at No. 15 was the statement. Josiah Trotter followed in the second. Free agency brought A'Shawn Robinson, Alex Anzalone, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Rakeem Nuñez-Roches, and Kenneth Gainwell. The front got heavier on purpose. The 53 that survived cut-down day stayed stacked in the trenches.

Big: Spending a top-15 pick on Bain and immediately pairing him with free-agent size and attitude along the front. This was a clear attempt to change the defensive identity, not decorate it.

Stupid: Letting the offensive supporting cast thin out while loading the defense. The window around Baker Mayfield does not expand because the front seven got meaner. It still requires enough weapons to keep drives alive.

Innovative: Building the roster around a specific physical profile instead of positional scarcity. Bain, Trotter, Robinson, and the rest were chosen to fit a violence-first defensive paradigm rather than the usual "best player available" compromise.

This was a reinforcement draft, not a soft retool. High capital spent on specific physical traits that match the coach's preferred violence. Bain and Trotter are the test cases. If they produce early, the strategy looks aggressive and correct. If they need time, the window around Mayfield gets tighter and less forgiving. Competence is no longer enough. These new pieces have to turn snaps into pressure once the games count.

Jaguars

Jacksonville's offseason was quiet by design. Extend Travon Walker. Keep the core. Avoid tearing down what worked. Quinn Ewers arrived late from Miami for a 2028 sixth-rounder and gives Trevor Lawrence a different backup profile. Daniel Faalele came earlier via trade from the Giants to shore up the line. The draft added depth instead of headlines.

Big: Paying Walker and choosing continuity after a strong season instead of chasing a splashy reset. That is a real organizational bet on the current core.

Stupid: Treating a good year like a finished product. A protect-and-maintain draft leaves very little margin if the division improves or the offense stalls.

Innovative: Using the backup quarterback spot as a low-cost upside swing. Trading for Ewers instead of settling for a pure veteran placeholder is a small but deliberate break from the usual "just don't lose the game" backup philosophy.

This was a protect-and-maintain draft. Continuity over courage. The risk is standing still while the rest of the division improves. The reward is proving last year's success was the new baseline instead of a one-year spike. The additions did not overhaul the roster. They were meant to protect it. Now Jacksonville has to prove it can win without the surprise factor attached.

The statewide read

Miami is buying volume and accepting the mess. Tampa is spending high capital on physical traits that match the defensive identity. Jacksonville is spending to hold the line and avoid regression. Three different Florida bets. The names, the draft, and the choices already tell you which one is rebuilding in public, which one is trying to get nastier, and which one is trying to stay relevant. September decides which bet was real.

Gameday in Florida: three road trips and one loud homecoming

NFL Sunday is here and Florida's trio spreads across three time zones of trouble.

Buccaneers at Bengals, 1:00. Paycor Stadium. Cincinnati's building gets loud early and the Bucs walk into the teeth of it. Road opener. Real temperature check.

Jaguars host Cleveland, 1:00 at EverBank. First home crowd of the season, and Duval does not do polite. The Browns bring a defense that travels. The pool decks bring the volume. Something has to give.

Dolphins at Las Vegas, 4:25. Allegiant, late window, west coast trip. Miami speed on that surface is a problem for everybody, and the Raiders know it. If the Fins get to the second level, it turns into a track meet.

Three games, three different kinds of tests. Road noise in Ohio. Home chaos in Jacksonville. Desert lights in Vegas.

scoreboard at flsportsdesk.com updates all day. Grab a beverage. It is going to be a long, loud Sunday.

Dolphins at Vikings

Preview

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET · U.S. Bank Stadium · FOX

Miami arrives in Minnesota at 0-3. The Vikings are 3-0. Three games have put these teams at opposite ends of the early standings, and the Dolphins now have to change direction on the road against an unbeaten opponent.

The market has Miami +10.5 with a total of 38.6. That is a blunt read: Minnesota is expected to control the game, while the Dolphins are expected to struggle to score enough to keep pace.

Miami’s first pressure point is its offense. A total below 40 leaves little room for wasted possessions, turnovers or empty trips across midfield. The Dolphins do not need a track meet. They need sustained drives and points before the game begins following the spread.

The defense has the harder assignment. Minnesota is unbeaten, at home and favored by more than a touchdown. Miami has to force short possessions and keep the Vikings from building the kind of early lead that makes an underdog abandon its plan.

The market could be wrong about the margin without being wrong about the winner. A low total creates room for Miami to stay within one possession if its defense holds and the offense avoids giving Minnesota extra chances. That path is narrow, but it exists.

A good Sunday for the Dolphins is competitive football into the fourth quarter, clean possession management and a defense that makes Minnesota earn every score. A bad Sunday is familiar by halftime: short Miami drives, a growing deficit and an unbeaten home team controlling the terms.

At 0-3, respectable is still available. Comfortable is not.

Game projection: Dolphins 16, Vikings 24.

Key call: Miami’s offense cannot create enough scoring possessions on the road. The Dolphins keep the total down, but Minnesota reaches 24 points and an 0-3 team cannot answer often enough.
